India captain for the Sri Lanka limited-overs series, Shikhar Dhawan, has admitted that the three-match T20I series will be crucial for him to put his name as a contender for the T20 World Cup. Dhawan did not feature in most of the matches of the T20I series against England at home earlier in the year. KL Rahul was preferred as Rohit Sharma’s opening partner. However, Dhawan scored 600-plus runs in IPL 2020 and was the leading run-scorer this year as well until the tournament was suspended.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly on Tuesday expressed sadness at the demise of India’s World Cup-winning batter Yashpal Sharma. The 66-year-old died of a cardiac arrest early on Tuesday morning. Taking to his official Twitter account, Ganguly wrote, "Sad to hear the news of Yashpal Sharma… had the opportunity to work with him as captain, player and then on TV. A very important part of the 1983 win which showed young players like us dream of trophies. RIP.”

Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan stated that he was confident of performing in the ODIs because he remained in a positive frame of mind even when he was not in the playing XI for the T20Is. Dhawan top-scored for India with 98 in the team’s total of 317 for 5 in the first ODI. Virat Kohli, debutant Krunal Pandya and KL Rahul also hit fifties as India put up an impressive batting display. In response, England folded up for 251 despite Jonny Bairstow’s scintillating 94. With the 66-run win, India claimed the crucial 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
